About Historic Hamtramck Stadium

Historic Hamtramck Stadium is one of only five Negro League home ballparks still in existence. In the 1930s, Hamtramck Stadium was home to the Detroit Stars and Detroit Wolves of the Major Negro Leagues, whose talented players were heroes in the African-American Community, yet too often invisible men to the rest of America. Because of that history, the site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.

In 2020 the baseball diamond was restored and given a new name: Norman ‘‘Turkey” Stearnes Field at Historic Hamtramck Stadium. Stearnes is also the grandfather of Rachele’s wife, Vanessa Rose.

In 2022, the historic grandstand reopened after a $3 million rehabilitation. Hamtramck Stadium is on its way to serve new generations of the community’s youth. Donations are welcome to continue to help with the restoration and preservation of this important historic site.
